Shiraz Viognier 2017

Poacher's Ridge

Shiraz Viognier 2017

A savoury, medium-bodied Shiraz, with just a touch of Viognier

Note – for orders of Reserve Wines less than the minimum quantity of 6 bottles, please contact us at info@poachersridge.com.au for a custom order.

We hand harvest when we can get maximum ripe fruit characters. The Shiraz and Viognier grapes are crushed together and co-fermented in 2tonne open fermenters. The ferment is allowed to reach 30°C and pumped over regularly with oxygen added during the peak of ferment. This allows maximum extraction of the fine grape tannins and colour from the skins. After fermentation the wine is run off into French Oak barrels, 20% being new, for 16 months maturation. The wine is pumped into tank prior to bottling, and again minimal fining, (egg white) and filtration is carried out.

Deep red colour.

Vibrant, fresh and fragrant bouquet. Plum fruits are backed by hints of apricots, cedary notes, and violet characters.

Soft, plush and generous mouthfeel, with plums and hints of apricots filling the mouth. The plushness and flavours carry through the length of the palate and are backed by subtle French oak characters and fine, balanced tannins.

Drink now or cellar for 8 to 10 years.

"While viognier is on the label, it's only about 2%. Excellent dark purple-red; florals and lots of pepper, woodsy spices and char, mingling with some dark fruit but ultimately this is a savoury, dry style. Lots to enjoy with this more medium-bodied wine but the tannins haven't quite smoothed out.”

"Immediately aromatic contribution from the viognier is apparent but it doesn’t overpower the essential qualities and characteristics of the shiraz. There is just a touch of that perfumed spicy gingery character on the nose. The palate is plush and velvety smooth with tannins getting a little viognier boost bring structure and poise. Drinking well now but a few more years wouldn’t hurt.”
